Evelyn walked through the halls searching for her best friend. She'd just come up with the perfect dress for the Snow Ball & she had to share. When she spotted Katherine she smiled & ran over to her. "Hey Kat. You've gotta see this dress. Absolutely perfect." She said smiling broadly.
She'd just had the best day ever. Did great in all her classes. Got money in the owlpost from her Mom. She got an owl from her favorite cousin... & to top it all off... she found the perfect dress for the Snow Ball. She felt unbelievably lucky. All she needed was a date... & the event would be perfect.
She looked at her best friend & showed her the picture. "Look Kat. Mom said she'll pay for both of our dresses & she said she'd throw in some French accessories. Perfect right?"

Katherine was wandering aimlessly through one of the corridors on the third floor. Her mum had heard all about that Snow Ball thing and just would not let the subject rest. Kat didn't want to look for a dress and shoes and jewelry and all that...but her mum had insisted on taking her off the school campus every single weekend in search of the perfect dress. All of the ones that her mum fancied got a look or groan of disapproval from Kat and vice versa.
Just as she was about to mutter something under her breath, she heard someone calling after her. Looking up, she saw Evie running in her direction with a huge smile upon her face. Looking down at the picture of the dress, she crunched her nose and shook her head. Dresses...oh how Katherine hated dresses. They always made her look frumpy and...well...they were just plain uncomfortable. Nothing like a good pair of jeans and a t-shirt.
"I think that'll look great on you. Is that the one you're getting for the Snow Ball thing?" she asked curiously, still not fully registering that Evie's mum was going to pay for both of their dresses and accessories. It took a few moments before those words set in. The second they did, Kat glanced up at Evelyn in disbelief and questioned, "Both? As in...I really do have to go to that ruddy dance, don't I?"

Evie's jaw dropped. "You honestly think Im going to that ball with out you?! Force, my dear friend, force. Either I pick the dress. Or my mom does. You KNOW what happens when my mom picks the dresses." She shivered at the thought of a big fluffy pink dress. "I suggest you do the same. My mom has been talking about heading to your house & dragging Aunt Lav along." she said warningly. "Kat. My mom is French. She's a lethal weapon on her own. "I swear to you. Her words will buy you a horrible dress, get you a horrible French date, & it'll make sure you get to the ball for the entire thing." She leaned against the wall. "Just go along with it. Like I am. You'll be rewarded. I swear it."
She glanced around at the students walking the corridors. "What lesson do you have next? I dont wanna keep you... I dont have anymore lessons today.... Just..." she sighed deeply. "Studying..." She groaned & looked over at Katherine. "Well? Ball or no? Lesson? You're a little slower on the uptake than usual Kat.... Are you okay?"

Kat stood there in complete shock and horror as Evie went on about how her mum was going to pick out dresses and dates and all that. It was more than just enough to have her own mother trying to shove fashion and the like down her throat by force but to be the victim of BOTH mothers was a nightmare. Her eyes were still wide but she'd managed, just barely, to keep her mouth from hanging open. Well, there goes all hope of hiding in the common room that night, Kat thought with a soft sigh. She'd meant to keep the sigh back but couldn't control it. The honest truth was that she didn't even want to have to worry about dresses and dates.
"Huh? Oh...um...I have...a free period for revision next. Means I'll be in the library until dinner, I think," Kat responded, half interested. She really didn't like the idea of dress shopping and dances. Trying to focus, she added, "Yeah, I'm a little slow today...well, since you mentioned that I'm being forced, kicking and screaming, to go to this dance thing. Dresses scare me...just like your mum and mine do. Seriously, I'm bloody scared to go anywhere with my own mother."

The third floor was almost empty, as classes just got out and people were headed off to their next class or back to the common rooms. Sunlight came through the windows and created a comfortable warmth inside the usually cold hallways.
Today was a great day for James, seeing as how he had a free period right now and another later on in the afternoon. He had just gotten out of Transfiguration and had successfully transformed his book into a bird, a feat he had been trying to overcome for a week. The smile on his face was quite apparent as he walked along side his best friend, Remus, who was going on about the Snow Ball. He had just made a very important point about dates for the Ball and James was grinning widely. He never thought that he would have trouble finding a date. 'I mean c'mon. I am a Potter.' "So who do you think you're going to ask, Remus?" James asked.

Unlike James, who had just been in Transifguration like a good little boy, Remus had decided that he wasn’t going to go to Muggle Studies today. Actually, he was probably going to blow off Divination, which was later on, although his mother would hurt him because she is the teacher. It sucked having a mother as a teacher, but it wasn’t as if it stopped Remus from doing anything. Shaking his shaggy hair out of his face, he thanked god for his good looks, as he was going to need them soon. He had been talking about the Ball to James, who stood there listening patiently, as if he wasn’t going to get a date. He, of course, was. Remus, the straightest male that ever lived, even knew that James was handsome enough to get any girl he wanted, after Remus of course. He had been rambling about girls in dresses for about a bit of time before he heard James speak. ”Ask?” he said with his eyebrow raised. ”Haven’t you heard? It’s a girls-ask-boys, they’re going to be just lining up to ask me.” He smirked widely, his loud barking laugh erupting and echoing in the hallway. ”But it’s alright... there’s enough Remus for everyone.” He hadn’t yet noticed the two girls that were chatting on the other side, but he would soon... of course he would, he was Remus Black after all.

Evelyn laughed. "Seriously Kat? Come on! What are you gonna wear to Teddy & Vic's wedding?" She shook her head. "Your mom is scary... really scary..." She shivered. "See! Look what the scary part of your mom did!" She laughed and thought for a while. She got off the wall & stood in front of Katherine. "Okay look. What if you pick the dress and I change it into a cool outift that's NOT a dress?"
She leaned back on the wall for a while. "Or... How about you show up... Stay for a minute... Then leave? Your mom wont get to say you DIDNT go..." She looked at Katherine hopefully. She was NOT going to the Ball alone and the only person she'd go with is her best friend. "Come on Kat..." she begged.

"Wedding?! Since when?! Who said I was going to a bloody wedding?! I wasn't informed of this!" Katherine exclaimed dramatically, shaking her head adamantly. If her eyes hadn't been wide enough earlier, they certainly were now. Dances were bad enough but weddings too? Grumbling under her breath, she shook her head again and said, "No way in Merlin's name am I going to wear a dress to the dance and then a wedding too. I hate dresses...they're...evil. Why can't I just like...I don't know, wear a nice shirt and some jeans?"
Katherine thought on what Evie said for a moment or two. A cool outfit that wasn't a dress would be much better than having to wear a dress. Leaning her head back against the wall, she pondered it and then replied, "I just don't want to be stuck at the dance in a dress Evie. I look so bad in dresses. That and then there's the whole date issue. Who in Merlin's name am I going to go with? I mean, besides my absolute best friend, of course."

”Haven’t you heard? It’s a girls-ask-boys, they’re going to be just lining up to ask me.” These words made James's grin wider. Sure, girls lined up for Remus, but James usually had a fair amount of girls that would swoon over him.
James was deep in thought over the Ball, trying to figure out which girl he would pick once they asked him. Then he overheard two girls talking about the Ball as well. Motioning to Remus, he pointed to where the voices were coming from. The voices were talking about dresses for the Ball and one of the girls seemed persistent in trying to get her friend to go in a dress, while the other refused. James raised his eyebrows at Remus with a grin and continued to listen to the girls' conversation.

James seemed to contemplate his answer quickly, because he quickly moved onto spying on two very pretty girls. Their conversation floated to his ears and Remus’ eyebrows shot up when he noticed James’ enthusiasm about their conversation.
”Well well James since when have you been interested in what girls wear to the ball...I would think that you only noticed their dress when you’re taking it off...” he joked, laughing out loud again. He glanced at the two of them, taking them both in. Gorgeous, the both of them, but in a completely different way. He could tell they were best friends, just the way they talked to each other, and he could also tell they were possible candidates.... For what? Only he knew.

Evie's jaw dropped again. She made a face then leaned over & pinched Katherine. " Of course you're going to the bloody wedding!" She exclaimed. She threw her hands up slightly. "Pourquoi le wouldnt d'enfer vous allez?! Ça alors Kat! Prendre le rhythme dans cette tête assez petite du vôtre!"* She mouthed off to Katherine in French then stopped & took a deeply breathe. "Katherine Finnigan. Your father is one of the original DA. I know personally that he will be there with the other DA members!" She looked around slightly then lowered her voice. "You dont have to wear a dress... Well... to the ball. I can make you some pants to go under the dress... but trust me... It'll work. By the way. Who the HELL said you looked bad in a dress?! I totally wanna murder that person! If I had your legs! Geez!"
Evie sighed. "Seriously Kat. You could probably get anybody to go to the Ball with you. Remember... its a girls ask boys dance. How about...." she looked around slightly & smirked as a certain 7th year boy caught her eye. "How about asking James? He's 7th year.... & well.... I wouldnt dare look at my own cousin in that way... but he gets girls' attention.... I know you must've looked a few times...." She giggled. "Besides.... I hear he's single... if you wanna leave your best friend alone...." She shook her head. "Or just wait for a guy to show interest in you... Maybe you'll be lucky like that..." She said, muttering the last bit.
[*apparently it says Why the hell wouldnt you go?! Gosh Kat! Pick up the pace in that pretty little head of yours![Thank my brothers girlfriend for that little bit of french];D]

"YEOUCH!" yelped Kat at being pinched. She feigned a glare at Evie and rubbed the spot where she'd been violently attacked. She'd have made some other retort but then her best friend began to have a good old rant in French. To this Katherine merely groaned and slouched down against the wall a little until Evelyn was done. Finally, she would have a chance to get in a word or two...or so she thought. Opening her mouth, Evie started in about wanting to murder whoever told Kat that she looked bad in dresses. Mentally, she groaned again but stood up straight and FINALLY replied, "First of all, I have no idea what you babbled on about in French and you should know that. Secondly, no one needed to tell me I look like an chubby old hag in a dress. I know I do...but it also does wonders to have constant reminders from my darling little brother."
Crossing her arms, Katherine put one of her feet back up against the wall. Dresses just weren't her thing. Dates were a whole other thing that she just couldn't fathom...especially not "girls ask boys." Sighing, she glanced in the direction that Evie had been suggesting. Okay, sure she might have once or twice stole an extra glace at Potter during classes over the years but he was way too far out of her league. "Lucky? My arse...when it comes to that sort of stuff I'm useless and hopeless. Trust me Evie. This whole dance thing just isn't going to work out, Kat sighed, glancing down at her foot for a moment before looking back up at her best friend and asking, "Who are you asking?"

"Shove it." James said with a grin in regards to Remus's dress comment. "They're talking about the ball..." The two girls' voices carried over to where James and Remus were and he could clearly hear what they were saying. Glancing back over at Remus, he saw an all too familiar look. "What? You think they're both going to want to ask you?" he joked. He knew that this actually was probably true.
The voices kept going on about dresses and his cousin's wedding, and James wanted to match a voice with a face. Slowly, he peeked around the corner at the two girls. He knew both of them, one of them he had had a crush on for a while. He looked back at Remus and nodded his head towards them with a grin. On his way to look at them again, he heard his name.
"How about asking James?" James silently waited for a response, not knowing who asked who, but he hoped the response would be positive.. When the girl did not respond directly to the question, James was a little downtrodden but made sure not show it Remus.

Remus laughed again, he seemed to be in a happy mood, but then again he was in a happy mood a lot. ”I got that... and they both don’t have dates.” He raised his eyebrow at his friend, who seemed to be interested in every word the two girls spoke. "What? You think they're both going to want to ask you?"
”Everyone wants a little piece of Remus.” Remus smirked at his own comment, but talked low enough to hear what the girls were talking about. The ball and Victoire’s wedding, the beauty who he had hit on many times although they were almost cousins, she was getting married, he remembered.
As James peaked around to look at the two girls, Remus caught a hint of recognition in James’ eyes. ” Those girls any special to you? They are gorgeous...” He chuckled, listening intently. He liked to think of it as simply listening in, and not spying... innocently walking in on a conversation was much more appealing than stalking. ”...and they have a thing for you.” Remus caught his friend looking beaten for just a second but it was enough for him to feel as if his friend felt unwanted. ”Cheer up, buddy.. there are other girls...”
Remus shook his shaggy hair out of his face gracefully, patting his friend on the shoulder. He may have been quite the ladies man, but hey, he had a sensitive side too you know.

With a nod, James looked at his best friend and grinned. "Yeah. Of course there will be. I mean, I am a Potter after all." He almost felt this way, knowing that there probably would be more girls, but hearing, or to be more accurate, not hearing a response from the girl did sting a bit.
James always had a bit of trouble with girls. He could talk to them fine and flirt with the mirthlessly, but when a girl would diss him, his ego would be crushed. Mostly this affected him because his bestfriend was never let down. The girls just completely fell for Remus and James was, at times, jealous. There was this one time when James was with Remus and the girls just acted like James wasn't even there. But James was okay with having his friend take over this time because the girl obviously had no interest in him.
"So...?" James asked Remus. "You gonna go over there and talk to them?" he asked.
